LVT vs Other Flooring

Luxury vinyl tile (LVT) flooring offers unique benefits compared to other popular flooring options like laminate, hardwood, and tile.

LVT vs Laminate

While laminate flooring is cheaper initially, luxury vinyl tiles are more durable and water resistant. Laminate floors use a photographic layer on top that can scratch, warp from moisture, and fade from sunlight over time. The vinyl layer in LVT provides superior scratch, stain, and water resistance. LVT is made from solid virgin vinyl as opposed to laminate which is printed paper, so LVT resists fading and damage. LVT is better for bathrooms, kitchens, basements and other areas prone to spills and moisture. LVT is also warmer underfoot than laminate.

LVT vs Hardwood

Hardwood gives a classic look but lacks the durability and water resistance of LVT. Water can cause hardwood floors to cup, warp or buckle, and scratches are permanent. LVT provides the look of real wood without the hassle, and modern printing techniques make LVT wood-look planks virtually indistinguishable from real wood. LVT is easy to install without nails or glue, whereas hardwood requires professional installation. LVT is better for high-moisture areas, pets, and active families with kids. Hardwood can only be refinished a limited number of times whereas LVT is more scratch-resistant.

LVT vs Tile

Tile is susceptible to cracking and chipping, whereas LVT is flexible and dent-resistant. Grout between tiles can attract dirt, mould and mildew, but LVT has sealed joints for easy cleaning. LVT installation is faster and easier than tile, without thinset mortar or precise tile leveling. LVT is warmer, softer and more comfortable to stand on than hard tile floors. LVT comes in convenient plank sizes that look like real wood planks, whereas tile generally has a uniform geometric look. For residential use, LVT provides advantages over tile for livability and maintenance.

LVT vs Carpet

Carpet is soft but traps allergens and stains, whereas LVT is hygienic and easy to clean. Spills soak through carpet and require steam cleaning, but LVT is 100% waterproof to keep floors pristine. Carpet wears unevenly over time and starts to look shabby, whereas LVT maintains its pattern without crushing or matting down. LVT lasts significantly longer than carpet before needing replacement. Carpet can harbour mould underneath without you knowing, but LVT resists moisture issues. For those wanting soft floors without carpet drawbacks, LVT is an excellent option.
